Fibre Optic Design Engineer

Role overview:
Fibre Optic Design Engineer, you will be responsible for conducting Fibre optic detailed network design. It requires an in-depth understanding of current fibre optic design standards and industry processes.
It also requires a working knowledge of a GIS based design support software program and close coordination with site field staff and operations personnel to support the final product.
Typical fibre plant design responsibilities range from the initial determination of the pathway routing and construction alternatives based on site walkouts to final detailed design generation.
The design engineer is fully responsible and accountable for the final design content and document generation to support the placement of the physical fibre infrastructure supporting Outside and Inside Plant communication facilities.
Skills, Competencies and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering technology or sciences or any other specialized training that makes the individual uniquely qualified to perform the job responsibilities
  • Posses an ACMA Open Cabler Registration Licence
  • RPEQ
  • Minimum of 5+ years related work experience in fibre detailed design and construction activities. Highly preferred 10+ years’ experience.
  • Knowledge and experience with GIS mapping tool(s) preferred
  • Will be required to pass a background security check.
  • Knowledge of industry and technology trends, with a focus on communications and Fibre Optic Infrastructure
  • Advanced written and oral communications
  • Experience in interpreting build requests and applying Engineering standards to fibre plant designs • Desirable: Familiar with civil construction focused on fibre builds including inground and aerial solutions
  • Knowledge/experience with Web based Applications used to design, record and deliver fibre builds
  • Strong Interpersonal, analytical and communication skills
  • Flexible and able to think quickly working to resolve design issues and make decisions.
  • Experience working on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Functions as a technical specialist with minimal supervision
  • Ability to learn ‘on the Fly’
  • Advanced Problem Solving
  • Ability to make informed and quality driven decisions
  • Basic knowledge of civil and building construction practices & principles
  • Member of Institution of Engineers, Australia (MIEAust), or relevant membership or Association
  • Industry certified training by a Fibre component OEM

Position Description
  • Support design delivery by generating detailed network drawings in GIS software while supporting ongoing design needs.
  • Assess delta between Network requirements and current installed fibre plant to develop installation requirement documents
  • Create high level preliminary route design and facility specifics to manage field-based teamwork instructions
  • Coordinate with field-based teams on specific site visit schedules and data gathering requirements.
  • Develop and apply a high quality of work undertaken as part of team or individually.
  • Calculate and generate all necessary splicing prints/port assignments and power loss budgets.
  • Perform design within allocated budgets and time frames
  • Provide design lead with updates on progress and roadblocks
  • Support design via any jurisdiction permits drawings required
  • Understand project milestones. Monitor status of milestones, and provide regular updates
  • Attend on-site where required
