Mechanical Design Engineer

Job Purpose
  • Project manage new product development from design to commercialisation including:
  • Designing & planning resources
  • Agreeing and delivering against timelines and budgets
  • Proto-typing & product testing
  • Patenting/design registration
 Key responsibilities
  • Under the direction of the R&D Manager, you will lead the effort to introduce new and improved solutions to markets across all channels.
  • Work closely with manufacturing to develop and deliver products to the customer from the feasibility stage to final release
  • Address shortfalls in products, materials and processes through development of creative and innovative approaches.
  • File disclosures for potential patents and/or trade secrets
  • Responsible for successfully launching new significant products to manufacturing in a rapid and efficient manner
  • Lead product development efforts and provide direction to engineers and technicians who may or may not be direct reports in problem solving activities and special projects
  • Work as main point of contact for customers on new products and to business partners (excellent communications skills and a customer focused approach is essential)
  • Capable of conveying ideas and concepts clearly and effectively through verbal and written communication
 Ideally you will have:
  • Tertiary or post graduate qualifications in product design and/ or Mechanical engineering discipline
  • At least 5 years engineering experience (preferably with a manufacturer)
  • Previous leadership experience is essential (Project or Team Leader)
  • 3D CAD (Inventor preferred), Illustrative, and engineering software experience
  • Experience in the hardware industry and knowledge of the industry of the industry standards would be a distinct advantage
  • Experience in liaising with overseas manufacturers (China and USA)
  • Professional attitude to testing and analysing of new and current product
  • Understanding the importance of accuracy for effective test results
  • Ability to organise tasks autonomously as well as the team
  • Finalising design for optimum performance and manufacturability
  • Verification and validation testing
  • Liaising with Lab Technicians to setup testing rigs
  • BOM creation
  • Creating end user/ production assembly instructions
  • Benchmarking competitor products
