Safety Specialist

Our client is a High profile Australian organisation known globally for its scientific research across areas such as materials, health, climate science, mining and engineering.
The Senior Safety Specialist is responsible for the delivery and management of high standard safety risk assessments and for ensuring that operational safety and reliability engineering techniques are applied and embedded at all stages of its operations (design, construction, commissioning, operations, maintenance and decommissioning).
Key accountabilities and responsibilities include:
  • Development, implementation and longer-term stewardship of technical safety assessments and risk systems and processes. These may include formal safety assessments, risk assessments, HAZOP/HAZID studies, SIL assessments and Human factor assessments.
  • Assess the links between identified hazards and major events, the effectiveness of control measures and the adequacy of the safety systems to ensure the continuing integrity of the control measures.
  • Assist operators to improve safety performance by exploring issues and developing practical strategies.
  • Developing and implementing technical safety risk elements to ensure that they are in accordance with organisation values; other industry codes and standards; and relevant laws and regulations they enable effective safety governance and compliance.
 Qualifications, skills and experience required:
Qualifications: Engineering Degree or equivalent (Chemical/Mechanical/Electrical or Science)
  • Skilled in analytical approaches to resolve complexity and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Skilled in the application of risk based decision-making framework, risk reduction and application of controls.
  • Skilled in the development and resolution of safety risk and reliability engineering based arguments.
  • Skilled in the application of safety in design, including inherent safety throughout the project life cycle.
  • Confident in facilitating risk workshops and other safety engineering processes.
  • Confident in conducting and reviewing consequence studies and quantified risk assessment methodology.
  • You will have a minimum 12 years industry experience in technical safety risk roles.
  • Self-starter with a high concern for accuracy and integrity.
  • Confident working in a matrix organisation.
  • Solve processing problems at a hands-on level.
  • Major hazard facility experience, and or the development of safety cases.
