Waste Technician - Decommissioning

The Waste Processing Technician provides safe and efficient collection, storage, decontamination and disposal services for all radioactive and hazardous waste generated and/or stored within the company’s site.
Our client is a Federal Government Agency, whose site deals in the decontamination and packaging of medical waste, with the aim of size reduction and decontamination.   
There are two separate types/duties of Technicians;
  1. All will be trained on general day to day decontamination of medical waste.(gloves, aprons etc)
  2. Decommissioning – 5 Technicians will be from time to time assigned to work on the decommissioning project.
This is a unique opportunity to  be trained in the safe handling & decontamination of low level radioactive medical waste.
Key responsibilities include:
  1. Work as part of a team to provide operational support to a variety of waste processing services.
  2. Accountable for Business as Usual activities along with unplanned events within intermediate level waste processing and handling, low level solid wastes, low level liquid wastes, waste characterisation, decontamination, laundry services and support to company’s projects.
  3. Ensure effective and compliant service for the collection, transportation, storage, processing, decontamination, characterisation of radioactive waste material in accordance with licence conditions, plans and arrangements and companies Safety Management System
Background required :
  • Previous experience working in a hands on environment like Boilermakers, Welders etc.
  • Experience in the safe use of power tools – band saws, plasma cutter, oxy welder
  • Previously working around cranes – dog man or rigger tickets advantageous

Roles are minimum 3 year contracts with the potential to become permanent employees and only Australian citizenship/passport holders are eligible as the successful candidate will need to have or undertake baseline security clearance.
Normal daily hours – Start at 8.00am, 30 minute lunch and finish at 4.00pm
  • Free on-site secured parking available.
  • Uniforms supplied and laundered on site daily
  • Overtime may include weekend work.
  • Medical assessment to be completed prior to start of contract
  • Security clearance application to be submitted and finalised prior to start of contract
Proposed recruitment timetable

July 27th – August 9th - Interviews with Ignite and selection of short list of candidates to refer to client
August 10th – August 14th –Interviews with Client  with short listed candidates
August 17th – August 21st – Successful candidates to start security application process (Approx up to 6 weeks)
Proposed Start dates – Early to Mid-October
